Guidelines to reduce the climate change impact of the Barcelona ENHR 2022 Conference, for organisers and participants.

All these points are suggestions that the organisers want to follow and ask participants to take into account. Each of these points may be supplemented with additional information:

1. Equality criteria for all human beings, with regard to gender, culture and beliefs. Avoid discrimination and sexist or non-inclusive language. Respect animals and their environment.

2. Travel: reducing CO2 emissions through mobility. For transport: more trains and less flying. Suggestions for travelling from best to worst: train, bus, boat, car, plane.

3. Local travel. Use the city’s public transport (linked to a single venue, the ETSAB). The organisation’s intention is to provide public transport tickets to participants for the four days of the congress. Best forms of transport: Metro, bus, tram, bike, walking or sharing a taxi.

4. Promote the local network of social, solidarity and cooperative economy. Stay at ‘ethical hotels.’ Avoid using tourist apartments and false sharing economies that are actually extractive. Choose hotels that respect workers’ rights. Buy souvenirs from local producers made from decent work.
5. Meals and local produce. Eat meals, soft drinks and other products from the local area, provided by local businesses, avoiding the use of plastic containers or pesticides. The organisation will take this into account and participants will be encouraged to refill their bottles at the water fountains.

6. Food and CO2 emissions. Reducing the consumption of meat and animal products, such as cow’s milk. Keeping this aspect in mind, the diet to eat would be (from best to worst) vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, reduced meat consumption, average meat consumption, and high meat consumption.

7. Sustainability and energy saving in work and meeting spaces.

8. Reducing the consumption of materials, in general but specifically of paper; avoiding plastic in congress documents for meetings and events; using products derived from the circular economy.

9. Recycling. Single-use plastics will not be used. Recycled materials will be used instead. Facilities to reuse and recycle any packaging used.

10. Solidarity actions for raising awareness: planting trees, beach clean ups, performing actions that make the risks visible and explaining measures to reduce the climate crisis, etc. Regarding these points, the field trip and activity on the first day will have this solidarity nature.
